Connecting Communities

Honoring Juneteenth

On Sunday, Airlines for America (A4A) will join the nation in celebrating Juneteenth, a day that represents freedom, hope and liberation. On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, Union Major General Gordon Granger informed enslaved individuals that the Civil War had ended and that they were now free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Now our country comes together to honor the significance of Juneteenth, or “Freedom Day,” as a day to reflect on our nation’s complicated history and shared diversity.

Last year, President Biden signed into law a bill recognizing Juneteenth as a federal holiday, making it the country’s 11th federal holiday and also signifying an important step forward in our nations fight against social injustice.

At A4A, we strive to be a leader in creating initiatives that promote opportunity for all and we hope you will join us in celebrating and reflecting on the significance and importance of Juneteenth as we all work to create stronger bonds and forge understanding in the community.

A4A and our member airlines are committed to promoting diversity, equality and inclusion. Our efforts to connect the world inspire us to foster a culture of respect among passengers and employees free of discrimination.
