Two Weeks to Go: What to Know Before the REAL ID Deadline

Attention all travelers – on May 7, 2025, all passengers will be required to present a REAL ID, or other acceptable form of identification, to get through TSA checkpoints nationwide.

With the deadline just two weeks away, all flyers should make sure they are prepared before heading to the airport for their next trip!

What other forms of ID are acceptable?

The TSA is regularly updating its list of acceptable forms of identification. Travelers who do not have a REAL ID can also get through airport checkpoints with a valid passport, DHS trusted traveler card, U.S. Department of Defense ID, among others.

It’s important for travelers using these other acceptable forms to ensure they are still valid before departure. For those planning to use their passport, travelers should ensure it’s not yet expired and plan to renew it more than six months before its expiration date as most countries require that upon entry.

What is a REAL ID?

In 2005, Congress passed the REAL ID Act to establish minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. This security change set minimum standards and security enhancements for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification. It also prohibits federal agencies, like TSA, from accepting licenses or identification cards from states that do not meet these standards.

Since REAL ID driver’s licenses and identification have been available for some time, many travelers may already meet the new security standards. In most states, travelers will be able to tell if they are REAL ID compliant because the identification cards are marked with a star.
