The U.S. and The Bahamas Sign New Air Transport Agreement

Pack your sunscreen—the Bahamas is open for business! Today, U.S. State Department Assistant Secretary for Economic and Business Affairs Manisha Singh joined Bahamian Minister of Tourism and Aviation Dionisio D’Aguilar in Nassau, The Bahamas, to sign the first bilateral air transport agreement between the two countries. The Agreement will increase accessibility for U.S. airlines and passengers flying to the islands, just in time for peak summer travel.

According to the U.S. State Department, “The Agreement establishes a modern civil aviation relationship with The Bahamas consistent with U.S. Open Skies international aviation policy. [The Agreement] will further expand our strong economic and commercial partnership, promote people-to-people ties, and create new opportunities for airlines, travel companies, and customers.”

The Agreement comes just months after Hurricane Dorian devastated the Bahamas, leaving a path of death and destruction. Since then, Bahamian leaders and residents have worked tirelessly to rebuild homes and businesses and restore confidence in travelers who want to visit the popular vacation destination. Their efforts are paying off – the Bahamas reported record-breaking visitor arrivals in 2019.

U.S. carriers – both passenger and cargo — are excited to strengthen our relationship with The Bahamas and to join in celebrating the natural beauty the islands have to offer.
