Secretary Duffy’s Update on Newark Airport and the Urgent Need to Modernize Our Skies

Today, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Acting FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau provided an update on recent disruptions at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and laid out a clear path forward focused on air safety and the modernization of our nation’s airspace system.

Secretary Duffy reiterated the airspace remains safe. Thanks to decisive action by the FAA and close coordination with airlines, flights continue to operate under careful oversight. Newark’s issues reflect a broader reality: The U.S. air traffic control system is outdated. Much of the technology dates back 25-40 years. Secretary Duffy called on Congress to fully fund a once-in-a-generation modernization plan. “This is the most critical infrastructure project that this country has at this moment,” he said.

Despite telecommunications and controller staffing challenges at the Philadelphia TRACON, Memorial Day weekend marked a major milestone: The U.S. saw a record number of flights – approximately 230,000 operations. With runway repairs nearly complete, controller staffing ramping up and long-overdue telecom upgrades underway, Newark is turning a corner. But real progress depends on investment – and urgency. As Secretary Duffy noted, “We’re ready to go on day one.”

U.S. airlines deeply appreciate the leadership and vision from President Trump, Secretary Duffy and Acting FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau to upgrade our nation’s airspace system. U.S. airlines are committed to collaborating on this bold push to modernize our skies and deliver lasting improvements for millions of Americans who rely on air travel every day.
