A4A Honors Life and Legacy of Fred Smith
NEWS UPDATE | June 22, 2025
WASHINGTON, June 22, 2025 – The following statement is attributable to Nick Calio, President and CEO of Airlines for America (A4A):
“Fred Smith was a pioneer of modern global shipping, revolutionizing the air cargo industry with his founding of FedEx. His leadership style with its focus on people and quality service serves as a model of success for other companies. He transformed Memphis far beyond FedEx’s economic impact, supporting several local educational and charitable institutions.
“Before his business success, he admirably served in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving two tours in Vietnam and being awarded several honors for his bravery. He continued to support those who serve with his philanthropic efforts for military families, including the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.
“Fred’s dedication to his country was only rivaled by his dedication to his family. Fred served as a longtime Board member of A4A. His son, Richard W. Smith, carries on that legacy on A4A’s Board of Directors today.
“We send our condolences to the Smith family as we honor the incredible life of a titan in our industry.”
