Cost of Consumer Goods on the Rise, but Airfares Remain Low

It’s no secret the cost of everyday goods continues to rise.

From the food on your table, to the electricity that powers your home, to the rent or mortgage you pay each month — data from the U.S. government shows these essentials have gotten more expensive over the past 10 years.

One thing that hasn’t gone up in price – airfare.

Compared to pre-pandemic, BLS data shows airfare prices changed less than 1% from 2019 to 2023. Food at home went up 25%, electricity also rose 25% and mortgages and rents increased approximately 19% and 20% respectively.

A4A passenger airlines are proud to offer consumers transparency and vast choice. Our members offer competitive pricing and a range of options to increase accessibility to air travel and to help customers make ticket selections that best fit their needs.

Demand for air travel is at an all-time high, and consumers are taking advantage: survey data shows 90% of Americans have flown and more than half of them have done so by the time they turn 16.
