Continuous Descent Approach (CDA)
The stair-stepped approaches to airports in use today, Continuous Descent Approach (CDA), begin many miles from the airport and require substantial time flying at low altitudes. Planes descend in steps and require additional thrust each time they level off. The benefits of CDA include significant reduction in noise, fuel burn and emissions, and shorter flights. For more information, see ATA's 2006 Economic Report, section on Continuous Descent Approach (CDA).
