In a February 2009 Letter to the Editor of Biodiesel Magazine, ATA vice president, environmental affairs Nancy Young writes about how the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI) is one of the key drivers in the search for commercially viable fuels. A CAAFI-developed timeline, for instance, calls for the certification of a 50% synthetic jet fuel by the middle of this year, and a 50% biofuel in 2010.
To foster the development and deployment of alternative jet fuels that meet our objectives, ATA is a founding and principal member of the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI), a consortium of government agencies, airlines, manufacturers, airports, and current and prospective fuel suppliers that are coordinating work on the research and development of alternative jet fuels, including technical specifications, environmental aspects, production and distribution.
