Air Transport Association Comments on FAA Safety Audit Findings

STATEMENT

WASHINGTON, April 2, 2008 – The Air Transport Association of America (ATA), the industry trade organization representing the leading U.S. airlines, today issued the following statement in response to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announcement of the findings of its maintenance audit:

“Running an airline is among the most complex business responsibilities in the world. From a maintenance perspective, it involves tracking literally hundreds of thousands of time-sensitive tasks to be performed on hundreds of aircraft constantly moving around the world. It also requires properly recording and documenting the performance of those tasks,” said ATA President and CEO James C. May. “As the safety audit has shown, the airlines’ performance is exemplary; nonetheless, we recognize that there always will be room for improvement. We welcome the FAA announcement of its next steps planned to improve communication, coordination and reporting.”

ATA airline members and their affiliates transport more than 90 percent of all U.S. airline passenger and cargo traffic. For additional information on the industry, visit www.airlines.org.
