Delta, Northwest Announce Merger Agreement

Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines announced plans to merge on Monday, April 14, 2008. The transaction would create the world's largest airline measured by traffic, and some industry experts believe it could also prompt other carriers to combine. The agreement remains subject to regulatory approval. Of the merger agreement, Delta CEO Richard Anderson said, "Our need to respond to the pressures of dramatically rising fuel costs and a softening U.S. economy drove us to take a closer look at all options to strengthen our future."
