In a June 5 Washington Times editorial, ATA President and CEO James C. May writes that cap-and-trade emissions legislation would hurt the airline industry, which is now faced with soaring fuel prices. He notes that the industry does not need the legislation to become green. "Since the cost of jet fuel is the industry's largest cost center, no industry in America is more motivated to limit energy consumption and resulting emissions than commercial aviation," he writes.
The Senate recently debated climate-change legislation aimed at creating a cap-and-trade system for greenhouse gas emissions. Airlines oppose the bill and say the system could add $5 billion to industry fuel costs if allowances are priced at even modest levels - or as much as $10 billion if allowances are set higher.
