Connecting and Protecting Our PlanetSM

The ATA airlines are committed to protecting our planet. Our airlines' exceptional environmental track record, which grows stronger every day, compares favorably with other industries. And, as the demand for air transportation continues to increase, our airlines are dedicating hundreds of billions of dollars to the purchase of new aircraft, developing alternative fuels and improving operational performance, all of which will further reduce noise and emissions.

U.S. commercial aviation has a strong environmental track record which is growing even stronger.

The U.S. commercial airlines improved fuel efficiency by 110 percent between 1978 and 2008, resulting in 2.7 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide savings – roughly equivalent to taking 19.5 million cars off the road each of those years.  Our record between 2000 and 2008 is particularly impressive, as we reduced fuel burn and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 5.5 percent, while transporting 17 percent more passengers and cargo.
