Security

A secure aviation system is critically important and covers a wide variety of areas including passenger, baggage and cargo screening, security of airport areas, aircraft, passengers and employees. While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) determine the necessary security measures based on a careful risk analysis, airlines work with their government partners to implement the measures in a way that does not adversely impact airline operations or inconvenience passengers. This area provides updates on the various security-related activities ATA is engaged in.

TSA Heightened Security Measures

The Transportation Security Administration is currently requiring enhanced security measures for all flights departing from non-U.S. locations to the United States.

ATA reports that TSA has stated clearly that if a passenger's date of birth or gender information is not included at the time of reservation, the passenger will still be able to travel.

ATA Executive Vice President and COO John Meenan testifies before the House Homeland Security Transportation Security and Infrastructure Protection Subcommittee on the industries commitment to meeting cargo screening requirements and to outline a few concerns, which must be addressed quickly in order to facilitate our meeting that commitment.

ATA Testifies on Air Cargo Screening

The airline industry has fulfilled the interim requirement that 50 percent of cargo be screened by February 2009 and reaffirm their committment to achieve 100 percent by 2010. However, this goal requires the continued close collaboration of the airlines, the Transportation Security Administration, freight forwarders and shippers.
